Matthew 7:24-27
King James Version (KJV)
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Sometimes it is very hard for me to make the connection between the portion of scripture read and sermon that was preached. Matthew 7:24-27 is the culmination of a powerful portion of scripture that starts in Matt 7:13. We see in these passages the powerful words of our Lord that contrast those who enter in at the wide gate vs. the narrow gate; those that bear fruit vs. those that do not; those who are false prophets and those true prophets who bear fruit; those who say “Lord,Lord” and those who “do the will of my Father which is in heaven”. The sayers and doers. The great final picture is the outcome of a true believer vs. a false professor as represented by the kind of house that is built – a house that is clearly a picture of a religious life or edifice. The house may look the same on the outside but the foundation is so different. One is founded on the truth, the Lord Jesus Christ and a life marked by obedience and repentance such that it withstands the storm (much like what Timothy says “Laing up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life” I TI 6:19). The other may have some resemblance on the outside, but without Christ is has no ability to withstand the judgement of God – it may have sounded good, but was not grounded in the truth of scripture. What a difference.
This message was not meant to be an exposition of Matthew 6:24-27. I used the passage to draw out a simple principle. Just as it is important to build your life on the rock of Christ, your marriage must also be built on the rock of Christ. I said at the beginning of the sermon that what I was saying was based on my observations from dealing with couples (pre-marriage and post-marriage) in over 30_years of ministry. Steve, you are correct about the interpretation of the passage. I have preached it that way time and time again. However, although each passage has one interpretation, there may be many applications. And, from my observations, a home that is not built on Christ and His word is headed for disaster. My message was meant to be a warning, not an exposition.
Correction: In my reply I mistakenly listed the reference as Matthew 6 rather than Matthew 7. It should say Matthew 7:24-27.
